6 Key Questions to Demystify Yoga

6 Key Questions to Demystify Yoga

Yoga is still growing in popularity. Difficult to resist the well-being it provides.  In order to demystify this practice, here are six frequently asked questions and their answers.

1. What does the word yoga mean?

“Yoga” literally means “union”. This practice aims to unify the body and mind through deep breaths, meditation, and physical postures that stretch and strengthen the body.

2. Do I have to take courses?

No, although taking a yoga class is more motivating than exercising alone at home. In addition, a teacher can check that the movements are done correctly and prevent you from hurting yourself. He can also offer you adaptations when certain movements are difficult for you. Finally, classes are a great way to meet people who like you want to be healthier.

3. Can I do yoga even if I cannot touch my toes?

Yes of course! In the same way that it is necessary to walk and do weight training when you are not feeling well in order to get better physically, people whose muscles and joints lack flexibility can benefit from the practice of yoga. You have to start gently, changing positions if necessary, without ever forcing. Within a few weeks, you should see noticeable progress in flexibility.

4. Should I see my doctor first?

It is best to consult your doctor before embarking on any new physical activity if you have any health problems, especially heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, or obesity.

5. What is the sun salutation

One of the most well-known yoga exercises is sun salutation. It is a tonic sequence that combines postures of opening and closing the body, all in coordination with breathing.

Each posture is articulated with the previous one and allows you to stretch and strengthen different parts of the body so that at the end of the sequence you will feel more flexible and full of energy.

It should be performed twice in a row, starting with the right foot, then with the left foot. As it requires a minimum of muscle strength and flexibility, it is not recommended for people who do not exercise at all.

If you have heart problems, some movements may be too strenuous. Back extension postures speed up the heart rate and cardiac patients are not advised to hold breath. Talk to your doctor.

Aside from that, the sun salutation tones the heart and improves blood circulation. Practiced with a mastery of the breath and an accentuation of the exhalation, it will reduce the manifestations of stress.

6. How often do you practice the sun salutation?

Yoga enthusiasts do it up to 12 times a day, but you can ease stress, gain flexibility, and improve your overall well-being just once a week.

Remember to breathe regularly throughout the movement, inhaling and exhaling at the start of each posture. Choose a comfortable surface, such as a yoga mat or carpeted floor.

Now that you know more about the practice of yoga, why not take the opportunity to do a little session?
